Interview: "Caitlin Clark Is the Reason I Started Watching the WNBA"
The WNBA has experienced tremendous growth in recent years, and few athletes have generated as much conversation as Caitlin Clark. From record-breaking performances to sold-out arenas, Clark has become one of the biggest names in basketball.
We recently sat down with basketball fan Chuck Wells to discuss why Caitlin Clark captured his attention and how he believes she's changing the future of the league.
Q: What's your overall opinion of Caitlin Clark?
Chuck Wells:
"Yeah, I totally agree. She's one of the biggest stars in basketball—if not the biggest. I never really paid attention to the WNBA until now, and a lot of that has to do with Caitlin Clark's skills and the attention she commands.
What made her popular is her incredible long-range shooting ability. She can hit shots from almost anywhere, and she's incredibly marketable."
Q: Do you think Caitlin Clark is treated differently than other players?
Chuck Wells:
"Of course she's treated differently. Listen, I have to say it—I believe some of it comes from ego, and I think there may even be some racial factors involved.
From my perspective, the league should focus on using her marketability because it benefits everyone. Instead, when fans constantly see physical play against her, some people lose interest. I think something needs to be done to stop that type of behavior."
Editor's Note: The views expressed above are Chuck Wells' personal opinions.
Q: If you had five minutes with Caitlin Clark, what would you tell her?
Chuck Wells:
"Honestly, I'd just tell her, 'You are the league.'
There isn't much I could say that she probably doesn't already know. I just think she's amazing."
Q: Do you believe Caitlin Clark is the biggest reason the WNBA has grown?
Chuck Wells:
"Come on—when did the WNBA really start taking off? Like I mentioned earlier, I wasn't watching the league before.
In my opinion, Caitlin Clark is the biggest reason the WNBA is where it is today. I think she's helped bring new attention to the league, and that creates more opportunities for everyone involved.
Thanks, Clark."
Q: Five years from now, what do you think Caitlin Clark's legacy will be?
Chuck Wells:
"Michael Jordan is the GOAT to me because of what he did for the NBA.
When I look at what Caitlin Clark is doing for the WNBA, I see someone who could become that kind of figure for women's basketball. She's bringing in new fans like me, creating excitement around the league, and changing the conversation.
That's why I believe Caitlin Clark has the potential to become the future GOAT of the WNBA."
Final Thoughts
Whether you agree with Chuck Wells or not, one thing is difficult to ignore: Caitlin Clark has brought millions of new eyes to the WNBA. Fans continue to debate her impact, her style of play, and her long-term legacy, but her influence on the conversation surrounding women's basketball is undeniable.
As the league continues to grow, the question may no longer be whether Caitlin Clark changed the WNBA—but just how big her impact will ultimately become.
